Nasal Growths and Masses: Early Detection of Cancer
Any lump, swelling, or mass inside or around the nose should be evaluated by a specialist. Benign growths like polyps are common but require monitoring. However, malignant tumors, including squamous cell carcinoma or melanoma of the nasal cavity, can initially present as a painless lump or persistent nasal blockage.
Symptoms to watch include:
- Persistent one-sided nasal obstruction
- Blood-streaked mucus
- Facial pain or swelling
- Vision problems or double vision
These warrant immediate medical attention and further investigation through nasal endoscopy or biopsy.
Foul Odor from the Nose: A Sign of Hidden Infection
A foul smell emanating from the nose or a bad taste in the mouth, especially when not linked to dental issues, can signal chronic sinus infections, foreign bodies, or even necrotic tissue within the nasal cavity.
Unknowingly putting tiny things in their noses can cause infection and odor, especially in children. In adults, a persistent smell should not be dismissed—it may signal fungal infections, tumors, or even autoimmune conditions like Wegener’s granulomatosis.
