Anemia and Pale Skin
As stomach cancer advances, internal bleeding can cause iron deficiency anemia, which manifests in several physical symptoms including:
- Pale skin or pale lining inside the eyelids
- Shortness of breath
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
Because stomach cancer can erode blood vessels, slow, chronic blood loss often goes unnoticed until anemia becomes severe.
Swelling or Bloating After Meals
Persistent bloating or abdominal swelling after eating—even small meals—may be a warning sign. In stomach cancer, this occurs when tumors interfere with the digestive process or block the passage of food.
This symptom is typically:
- Accompanied by gas or pressure
- Misdiagnosed as irritable bowel syndrome
- Worsening progressively over weeks or months
Ignoring this can lead to delayed diagnosis, especially in younger adults who are not considered at high risk.
Difficulty Swallowing (Dysphagia)
While not common in early stages, trouble swallowing may occur as the cancer progresses or if tumors develop near the junction between the esophagus and stomach. This symptom can evolve slowly, beginning with difficulty swallowing solid foods and advancing to trouble with liquids.
Patients may also notice:
- Choking or coughing during meals
- Pain while swallowing
- A sensation of food getting stuck
This requires urgent investigation, as it may signify significant progression of the disease.
